The independent Republic of Finland will be 100 years old in 2017. Come and celebrate with us in a real castle!
The first weekend of the 2017 Savonlinna Opera Festival, July 8–9, will be one of the greatest highlights of the celebrations honouring 100 years of Finnish independence. The world premiere of The Castle in the Water by Aulis Sallinen, his opera Kullervo penetrating to the very heart of the Finnish ethos, and a joint concert in Kerimäki Church by two legendary Finnish choral institutions, the YL Male Voice Choir and the Tapiola Choir together constitute a weekend virtually unmatched in the Festival’s long history.
As the Festival’s founder Aino Ackté once put it: “As the sun slowly set, the view of the castle walls was one of supernatural beauty. It is a view I could not forget, and it occurred to me that all the world should see it. We should bring all nations here and say: This is part of Finland and – such was my train of thought – if you were to see our country, its simple beauty could not fail to enchant you…”
The opening of the 2017 season of the Savonlinna Opera Festival is a perfect tribute to centenarian Finland. Please do join us. Long live independent Finland and the brightest jewel in its cultural summer crown!
